| WHO'S GOT YOUR BACK? Where can you go for advice when your adoption-parenting journey veers into challenging territory? The "we've-got-your-back" resources listed here offer parents information gleaned from adult adoptees, from parent peers and from adoption professionals. Of course, the actual, practical application of new parenting info is always tougher in real-life, but your parent-prep will at least arm you with behavior response options. It may occasionally even place you in the hallowed parent position of being one step ahead of your children (hey, it could happen!) |
Becoming a clued-in, hands-on parent who can address the extra emotional and / or behavioral layers that our adopted children may sometimes present, gives us a strength-base to return to when the going becomes more complicated (think tween and teen years!). Much of our positive, proactive adoption parenting is accomplished by making a conscious, daily effort to: 1) FEARLESSLY utilize honest, open parent-child communication 2) DISCOVER the child’s point of view and reality - the actual basis for her behaviors. What fuels her reactions? 3) VALIDATE the child's feelings and empathize with her experience 4) SEEK HELP when you are in over your head! |
